Andre Weathers - Where is he now?

Pick-SixAccording to this, “After winning the National Championship with Michigan in 1997, Weathers pusued a career in the NFL with the New York Giants. After a devastating Super Bowl loss and a severe knee injury, Weathers decided to call it quits. He is now on the coaching staff for the football team at Flint Central High School.”

Despite being an All-Big Ten Cornerback, Andre Weathers was never a star at Michigan, and my friends and I were surprised to see him get drafted in 1999. And while he was prone to give up a big play or three, Weathers made one of the most surprising and important plays of the 1997 season, which, in hindsight, possibly saved Michigan’s National Championship hopes. As Ohio State QB Stanley Jackson was being pressured, he franticly threw a short pass directly at Weathers. Weathers caught the ball and returned it for a 43-yard touchdown.

After collecting an interception of his own during the game, eventual Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson said “Stanley Jackson threw me a great pass.”

The way I saw it, the “pass” to Andre Weathers was even better, and arguably more important. It seems that Weathers has settled back into “normal” life at home in Flint, in which he is certainly able to keep an eye on the local talent in that area, and do a little recruiting for the Maize and Blue.

While I didn't have the opportunity to see him play at Michigan, I did see Weathers play a little for the New York Giants. He came to camp in Albany in 1999 as a low-round draft choice, seeming to have little chance of making the team. In the preseason, he showed himself to be the only corner on the roster who could actually cover (the overrated Jason Sehorn was hurt and veteran Phillippi Sparks was over the hill). He started the season opener against Tampa Bay, and received another "pass" from Trent Dilfer late in the game, then walked into the end zone for a seven yard touchdown. For about a week, he was touted as the savior of the Giants' awful secondary. Then he blew out his knee in practice and disappeared. He showed up again for a couple plays against the Eagles the next year and then really disappeared. But for one week in early September, 1999, he was the number one corner on an NFL team.

I don't care what anybody has to say about Andre'. He is a great guy and whether he ever plays football again he is still an outstanding athlete. Unfortunately his athletic career did not go as far as it could have but he will always be well known and recognized for the contributions he made to all of the teams he played on throughout the course of his career.

I was good friends with Dre at Michigan and he was one of the most genuine, intelligent, cool guys at Michigan...despite giving me the worse haircuts you can imagine. I was looking forward to seeing him play on Sundays and it's unfortunate that his injuries may have taken that away, but he comes from a strong family and was a success long before his football days and will be one long afterwards.

Andre is starting his Head Coaching career in the NAFL with the Genesee Patriots located in the Flint, MI. area (his hometown).
His football playing days are over after three knee surgeries (two in the NFL). He is one of the elite talents that is coaching in the Flint area and doing a fine job of developing character and fundamentals in the athletes he's coming in contact with.

I played for Weathers this year in the NAFL and I was lucky to have him as a coach. He is an excellent person and an excellent football coach. As long as things work out, I hope to be playing for him again next year even if we are both not with the Patriots.

I'm not a UM fan, nor will I ever be, but I disagree about Weather not being a "star." I thought he was a solid corner in college, and would have been barring injury in the NFL. Nice post, although I'm about five years late.
